The Galtymore DancehallShowband Memories is a programme of music from, and information about, the Showband Era. The programme is broadcast fortnightly on Fridays from 12-1PM on Digital Hub FM and is presented by Chris Williams. The programme is on a break at the moment and will return when the station makes it's expected return to the airwaves on Friday 9th December 2011.

Throughout the series you will hear music from artists such as Brendan Bowyer, Dickie Rock, Joe Dolan, Eileen Reid, Brendan O'Brien, Butch Moore, Tina Reynolds, Sonny Knowles, Sean Fagan, Maisie McDaniel, Red Hurley, Sean Dunphy, Gene Chetty, Dermot O'Brien, Big Tom, Glen Curtin, Larry Cunningham, Tommy Drennan, Sandy Kelly, Philomena Begley, Margo O'Donnell, The Times, The Columbia Showband, The Freshmen and many more.

The programme will from time to time feature artists in profile as well as information about the songs and the ballrooms where the showbands fulfilled their primary role which was to entertain the crowds and in the words of Albert Reynolds, to Send Them Home Sweatin'.

Listeners are invited to text or email the show with their requests and dedications, and their memories from those great showband days. The text number is 087 94 33 100. If you're listening from outside the Rep. of Ireland the number to text is 00 353 87 94 33 100. The email address is showbandmemories@gmail.com

I will continue to inform the listeners of upcoming showband-related concerts and I hope to have tickets to give away for some of these concerts, just like the pair of tickets I gave away for A Christmas With Red Hurley which took place at the Helix Theatre on Saturday 17th December 2011 at 8.00PM.

I will also continue to pay tribute to some of the showband legends who have sadly passed on. In my most recent show, on Friday 21st May, I paid tribute to late Dermot O'Brien on the eve of his third anniversary. In the past I have paid tribute to the late Brendan O'Brien of the Dixies (who sadly passed away on 3rd April 2008), the late Butch Moore of the Capitol (who sadly passed away on 3rd April 2001), the late Glen Curtin of the New Blues and Nevada Showbands (who sadly passed away on 20th September last year), to the late Billy Brown of The Freshmen (who sadly passed away on 6th June 1999), to the late Fran O'Toole, Tony Geraghty and Brian McCoy who lost their lives on the night of the 31st July 1975 in what became known as The Miami Showband Massacre, to the late Tom Dunphy of the Royal Showband who died in a road accident just two days before that tragic event, to the late Joe Dolan (who sadly passed away in Dec. 2007), to the late Dave Glover, the late Maisie McDaniel and the late Pat McGeegan.

During the last year Red has recorded with various choirs in Ireland, Africa and the US for the album How Great Thou Art which was initially planned as an American-only release. However due to the phenomenal response the record company has released the album and the title track in Ireland and the UK.

Red recently performed for American Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize Winning Author - Dr. Maya Angelou, to celebrate her 80th birthday. He has since become involved in her work with the Community Healing Project and her own community projects. Dr. Angelou calls Red 'Her Son' and has helped introduce him to a whole new audience in America.

"Art makes us human and true art can make us truer to who we can be ashuman beings. The song, the poem, the dance, the painting may be beautiful but they truly move us only if they express emotional truths. These songs of Red have moved me greatly. He sings to me, down in my soul" - Dr. Maya Angelou

Fans of Arklow's Red Seven / Columbia Showband will be pleased to know that one of the band's founding members, Joe Weadick, has written a book entitled Memoirs of the Red Seven / Columbia Showband.

The book, which took ten years to write, gives a history of the band and includes a chapter by each surviving member, each telling their own personal experiences, including many interesting stories. Chapters have been written by the author in memory of band members who have passed on.

The book is priced €15.00 and is available in most Arklow newsagents and at Easons in the Bridgewater Shopping Centre, Arklow. It is available in Byrnes Book Shop in Gorey, Co. Wicklow and in Chapter One Book Shop, also in Gorey. It is also available in Track One Music Store in Wicklow Town and in Everest Music Store in Bray.

However, if either of these book stores are a little bit out of your reach, you can still purchase a copy of this great book by sending a cheque or postal order for €15.00 to the author: Joe Weadick, 44 Fernhill, Arklow, Co. Wicklow.

This book not only tells the story of Arklow's Red Seven / Columbia Showband, it also provides the reader with a great insight into the Showband Era in general. It really is a great read and is a must for all Showband lovers.

Hi Chris. My name is Alan Carr . I was with Stage 2(Joe Mac and Brendan O'Brien) from 1973 -1977. I became the front man after Brendan's unfortunate accident in 1974. I have been in Canada since 1977, living now in Alberta and still singing full time. I meet up with Bowyer every now and then on my trips to Vegas, he is still in good form. I have some photos and Mp3s of Stage 2 if you are interested?. I spoke with Brendan O'Brien not long before he past and he seemed to be doing very well.
Hope to hear from you soon, Alan.
