Maora Staire is a programme of interest to local historians and other listeners who enjoy hearing about Ireland's past. We try to interview people who have contributed to or witnessed historic events during their lifetimes.
Two of our subjects were centenarians Colonel Sean Clancy and Mrs Sheila White. Sean Clancy was born in county Clare in 1901 and died in 2007.
Sheila White was born in Rathfarnham county Dublin in 1906 and passed away in 1907. During her long life Sheila worked in the Revenue Commissioners' office from 1923 to 1981. After retiring at aged 75 she lived for a further 26 years.
Other famous figures who agreed to talk to us are Mick Higgins of Virginia county Cavan. Mick is the last surviving member of the Cavan team who beat Kerry in the Polo Grounds, New York in 1947. This was the only All-Ireland final played outside the island of Ireland. Cavan went on to retain the Sam Maguire cup in Croke Park in 1948. Both these teams were led by Irish Army Captain the legendary John Joe O'Reilly.
Mick captainted the last Cavan team to win an All-Ireland senior title in 1952.
We hope to talk to Sean Óg O'Callaghan who broadcasts the longest running radio programme in the world. He gives the GAA sports results eHe first sat in front of a microphone in 1934 when he assisted his father - also Sean to give the sports results to a very grateful listening public.
